Building the Canal
A more recent look at the works for the new canal where, after the digging, new shoulders in reinforced concrete are being built. The workers are tying rebars and coupling them to the palisade of micropoles, clearly visible on the left of the picture. From left to right, the different stages of the work are visible: the rebarred shoulder, the molds in place and the reinforced concrete wall awaiting to be plastered.

Throwaway Art
“Arte a perdere” (Throwaway Art) is a display of contemporary art organized in “Piazza Mazzini” and in the former “Parterre”, now Sandro Pertini Park.Giuseppe Mazzini had his monument almost cloned, and he is not amused. Is someone implying that he was an airhead? This one, at the “Parterre”, was the only work I really like.Throwaway art may seem an oxymoron, but here, in many cases, the term is probably self-explanatory.

Nuovo Mercatino Americano
The “Mercatino Americano” has been in its new location, near the ferry terminal, for almost an year. The new market has now some kind of roofing covering the space between the stalls, and it is considerably more roomy and airy than where it once stood.Don't ask me what are they doing, maybe it's better not to know...There is still a definitely American flavor to this market.

Surfin' Lungs
My knowledge of surf music doesn't go much beyond the Beach Boys, so I almost stumbled on the first night of the Surfer Joe Music Summer Festival at the “Mercatino Americano”.A very good British band called Surfin' Lungs was playing beach tunes from the 60's and I am quite ashamed that I didn't know most of them. The festival goes on for three more days at the Otto e Mezzo Studios with many more bands and a display of “Americana”, mostly vintage cars.

The Dig
I neglected to inform you about the redigging of the old canal in “Viale Caprera”. The first part is almost complete and in these pictures of about one month ago you can see how the works are going. In background the new bridge of “Santa Trinita” and the “Fortezza Vecchia”. They are digging up to the old shoulders of the canal, which have been already reinforced with micropoles. The workers are placing rebar on the bottom, where concrete will be poured later.

Imagination & Illusion
The 47m (154ft) “Imagination” is a the first model of a new line of semi-displacement yacht, entirely made of aluminium by Benetti Yachts. The boat can easily reach 24.6 knots as maximum speed and will be ready for her owner next July. The “Illusion” is a 46.5m (152ft) boat just out of the Benetti yard, ready for delivery to Camper & Nicholsons for their charter fleet.

Wandering
I have found a few figs in “Viale Marconi”. I pass by often but did not know there was a fig tree here.A door handle which was formerly used as a knocker. “You'll die! Son of a bitch”. I hope an unholy wish, not a threat. An quite hypnotic decoration on a gate in “Via delle Grazie”.There are worse things than a flat tire.

Coppa Barontini
After winning the “Coppa Risi'atori” two weeks ago, the “gozzo” of the quarter of “Venezia” won the “Coppa Barontini” last Saturday. I didn't see the race so I am posting an archive photo taken last April, during the “Trofeo D'Alesio”.“San Jacopo” was an excellent second, the picture was taken last Thursday, during a training session.

Libreria Edison
When I was younger the “Teatro Lazzeri”, a movie theater, hadn't a very nice reputation and was quite seedy and already run-down. It has been closed and abandoned for years when finally reopened as “Edison Bookstore”.The street level hall is roomy and spectacular, surrounded by a gallery with a cafe. The basement gets even some natural light from above. The “libreria” is open 9-24 on weekdays, 10-24 on Sundays. The bookstore opened in December 2008 and is a welcome ray of light in an area almost deserted at night.

That's Me
If you keep shooting people on board the departing ferries, it may happens that they'll shoot back: meet my friend Paolo and his son.Few days ago Paolo and his family were leaving for Sardinia, so we planned this exchange of shots. That's me, obviously the one with the camera, at the far end of the Capitaneria pier, from where I take most of my photos inside the “Porto Mediceo”.

Giorgio Armani's Yacht
We have already seen many superyachts lately, but this one has a well known and world famous owner: Giorgio Armani. The 65mt (213ft) “Maìn” was built in 2008 in Viareggio by the Codecasa yards. The boat is now in our small dry dock. The construction of the new yacht took almost three years, with Armani himself following closely and contributing to the overall design of the boat. The stylist personally designed the interior.
Armani's former yacht, “Mariù”, is for sale. If you are interested check: www.mymariu.com.

Easy Walk
I began my Sunday walk with a “tattooed” Smart.A lovely spot in “Piazza della Vittoria”, almost the same of Ménio.I have found a cartoonish lion staring at me from a shop window.Nine chimneys, a more chaotic version of the six chimneys...The golden man careful observes the area of “Piazza Benamozegh”, he has probably heard that someone wants to build a multi-storey car park there. The “infradito” (flip-flops) is one of the luckily unsung symbols of Livorno, here in souvenir version, with dolphins jumping in front of the “Fortezza Vecchia”.
