A few days ago, with our friend Stefano, the one of the Facebook page, and thanks to the helpfulness of Ennio Weatherford, vice president of the congregation, we were able to get inside the Dutch Church on the “Scali degli Olandesi”.
We are showing you olnly a preview because most of the images shot will be used for a coming conference on the church. Sadly the broken glasses transformed the temple in a giant pigeon house. The slightly ajar main door is an unusual sight. On a side of the entrance we can see this memorial plaque. The stairs leading to the upper floor are full of debries and guano.

Before & After
How the moored fishing boats took their power a few months ago. This is where they can put the plug now, since last August. No more loose cables on the ground crossing the whole pier.

The Locomotive
I am glad to tell you that we have just escaped from the long series of posts about the Food Fair, for a walk toward “San Marco” gate.
Our first find is an old steam locomotive placed in the front yard of the “Micheli” elementary school, in “Piazza XI Maggio”.A very orange tobacco shop in “Piazza della Repubblica”.This guy is probably looking at the clothesline.Portable toilets are compulsory at construction working sites, but this one in “Via Solferino” looks quite unstable and almost Pisan!“Scali del Vescovado”, old bolts on a side door.

Salami & Cheese
Most of you probably know that I am not a big fan of many events organized in town, but this fair is really something different: you can get lost in a sea of stalls vending delicious foods and drinks.
I sadly missed last year's edition, but this will never happen again!Where “capra” is goat...... “tartufo” is truffle and “cinghiale” is wild boar.(To be continued...)

Bowl of Hygieia
Here is the bowl of Hygieia, one of the symbols of pharmacy, on the corner of “Via De Larderel” and “Piazza dei Mille”, just outside a municipal pharmacy. Hygieia was the Greek goddess of health. The same symbol on the wall of our city hospital, in “Via Gramsci”.A simpler version of the bowl outside a pharmacy in “Via Grande”.
One more example, if you like, in an older post.

The Factory
One of the eyesores of Livorno, sitting just next to the “Parterre”, is the former Pirelli factory. While part of the compound, the administrative offices, are now used by several non-profit organizations, the once busy sheds were practically let to rot for years.Part of the L-shaped structure is used for some kind of storage, but the rest is almost crumbling.I heard that there is a project to transform this space in an archive or a library of sorts but, in the meantime, nature is taking over.

Mercato del Pesce
The “Mercato del Pesce” (Fish Market) seen from the top of the “Mastio di Matilde”. In background the Venice quarter and, on the left, the “Ponte della Venezia”. In foreground the terrace we have seen in “Piazza dei grani” and the new “Santa Trinita” bridge. The market was built on a project by the architects Beata di Gaddo and Pietro Barucci, winners of a design contest organized in the late 1950s by our Municipality.Looking like a pagoda and, as they say, inspired by the shape of a sail, it was built in the early 1960s using the béton brut technique. The building looks more like a tent to me, never had many fans in town and teaches us the wonders a good coat of paint can do.

Mid-October
The lantern above the dome of the church of “Santa Caterina”.The same lamp post seen in the End of May and Pirate's walks.A year after our post about Low-Cost Lamp Posts, most of these skinny lights are still around, here with some strange implements. One may wonder if no news is really good news...The colors are right, the pose is perfect: these scooters are flirting.
