The Big Anchovy

A few days ago a “grande acciuga” (big anchovy) has been painted on the roof of the decrepit Fish Market building. It is a work of Libera Capezzone and the words below say: “Lische squame coda amore. Libertà” (Fishbones scales tail love. Freedom).

The project was sponsored by a brand of paint, so it would have been nice to paint also the rest of the roof, which badly need it. This would have been also a better background for the big fish.

Dinner Is Ready

A lot of gulls now feed on garbage and you can see them in places that are relatively distant from the sea, colonizing roofs while squawking loudly and ceaselessly for our great pleasure.

This guy doesn't like junk food and has been able to catch a sizable prey inside the Porto Mediceo. He is mildly alarmed by my presence, but luckily I am not so keen on chewed raw fish from polluted waters.

Another old-fashioned gull is ready to dine on fish and is probably waiting for a glass of white wine.

Mercato del Pesce

The “Mercato del Pesce” (Fish Market) seen from the top of the “Mastio di Matilde”. In background the Venice quarter and, on the left, the “Ponte della Venezia”. In foreground the terrace we have seen in “Piazza dei grani” and the new “Santa Trinita” bridge.The market was built on a project by the architects Beata di Gaddo and Pietro Barucci, winners of a design contest organized in the late 1950s by our Municipality.Looking like a pagoda and, as they say, inspired by the shape of a sail, it was built in the early 1960s using the béton brut technique.

The building looks more like a tent to me, never had many fans in town and teaches us the wonders a good coat of paint can do.
