Piazza Magenta

Works in Piazza della Vittoria, Piazza Magenta, Livorno
It should be “Piazza della Vittoria” (Victory Square), but they keep calling this square with its old name: “Piazza Magenta”.

Some maintenance works are already started and were much needed: on the left you can see the sorry state of a path last Sunday, on the right how it was three days after.

Four Palms

Piazza del Municipio, Livorno
After few months of works, the other half of Piazza del Municipio is taking shape: here they were transplanting four huge palm trees. These photos were taken in mid September, the square is now complete and we will see it soon.

I keep missing the fascination of our city with this kind of trees, already present in the part of the square refurbished a few years ago.

The Other Half

Piazza del Municipio, Livorno
Part of the square was refurbished five years ago, now is the other half of Piazza del Municipio which is changing face. This area, mostly a parking lot between Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) and Palazzo Granducale, will become a “pedestrian zone” with some green, palm trees, and a lot of speeding bicycles.

We are usually wary of new works: in fact they already stopped for a month because the planning was wrong...

The New Scaffolding

Dutch church, chiesa degli olandesi, scali degli Olandesi, Livorno
It is good to see that a new scaffolding is being erected on the facade of the Dutch church. With the still scarce funds now available they will be able to stop the decay, preserving the building from further damage and at least partially securing it.

Works Have Started

Dutch church, chiesa degli olandesi, scali degli Olandesi, Livorno
Restoration works have started at the Dutch church. The area has been cleaned up from weeds and the old rusty scaffolding has been removed: quite a difference from a month ago.

Work in Progress

Works, Town Hall square, LivornoSome kind of works are going on in “Piazza del Municipio” (Town Hall square), where an excavator is resting proudly on a mound of earth. An Useless Dig

Works for a new canal, Venezia quarter, LivornoYou won't believe this. Yesterday you have read how long time ago “Piazza della Repubblica” was built covering an historic canal. Today I'm trying to explain you how a perfectly good square would be dug up to reopen a scarcely historic and useless canal.Works for a new canal, Venezia quarter, LivornoSome of you will probably recognize the square as the “Luogo Pio”. The canal will cut in half this place and will be crossed by a road bridge and two footbridges.Works for a new canal, Venezia quarter, LivornoA short tract of the canal has been dug few years ago and is now nothing more than a trash collector, dirty and without any charm.Works for a new canal, Venezia quarter, LivornoThis photo was taken from the gray bridge you can see in the middle of the third image, at the other end of the projected canal. Imagine a straight dig in the middle, few meters wide, and you could see the impact of the works. Local papers say that the cost would be at least 3 million euro: our wiser forefathers must be scratching their heads...

Cherry Pickers

Cherry picker, boom lift at work, LivornoThe correct term probably is “aerial work platform”, but I think these boom lifts are usually called cherry pickers.Cherry picker, boom lift at work, LivornoThis one is working on the roof of a seven-storey building facing the “Fosso Reale”, whose high walls add a few meters and a bit more thrill to the job.Cherry picker, boom lift at work, LivornoThis other guy is working quite relaxed just over the street lights. My one and only thought when I see one of these devices is: what I would catch with my camera from up there...

Where is Trillian?

Surfing & Working

Moby Drea, people at work on a jetty, Porto Mediceo, LivornoUnder the eyes of Tweety, Taz, Bugs Bunny and Duffy Duck, part of the “Porto Mediceo” is slowly changing in a marina as new floating piers for leisure boats are placed on the south side of the harbour.Service boat working at new jetties, Porto Mediceo, LivornoIn one of our first posts we showed this boat, calling it a cartoon boat for its funny look. Now we can see that this is a serious boat: it is used by the divers anchoring the new piers with underwater chains.New jetties, Porto Mediceo, LivornoTwo weeks later the new pier has already some boats, while the electricians are still working on the power pedestals.
