Dolphins
“Dolphins” by Carlo Reishammer (1840), Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall). This group, recently restored, is one of the several once decorating the entrance of the Dogana d'acqua (Customs on the Water) and the Porta a mare (Gate to the Sea). Made in cast iron, they were subsequently placed at the Ardenza marina where were almost destroyed by the sea spray. (Already posted on Instagram)

Realizzati in ghisa, furono collocati in seguito al porticciolo d'Ardenza dove furono quasi distrutti dalla salsedine. (Già pubblicato su Instagram)

Lorenzo Fratellini
We have already seen the busts and the reliefs of our Council chamber, today we are looking at its only painting. It is a large oil on canvas (cm 165 x 255) titled “Veduta di Livorno dalla parte del Fanale” (View of Livorno from the side of the Lighthouse) dated in the first half of the 18th century and attributed to the Florentine painter Lorenzo Fratellini.

Four Palms
After few months of works, the other half of Piazza del Municipio is taking shape: here they were transplanting four huge palm trees. These photos were taken in mid September, the square is now complete and we will see it soon.
I keep missing the fascination of our city with this kind of trees, already present in the part of the square refurbished a few years ago.

The Other Half
Part of the square was refurbished five years ago, now is the other half of Piazza del Municipio which is changing face. This area, mostly a parking lot between Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) and Palazzo Granducale, will become a “pedestrian zone” with some green, palm trees, and a lot of speeding bicycles.
We are usually wary of new works: in fact they already stopped for a month because the planning was wrong...

The Reliefs in the Council
We have already seen the eight busts decorating our Council Chamber. Here are now four bas-reliefs, placed on the walls just above the busts, illustrating the history of our city.
Looking from the public area we have on the left “Livorno nella leggenda” (Livorno in legend).
On the right we can see “Livorno all'epoca della contessa Matilde” (Livorno at the time of the countess Matilda).
Opposite we have on the left “Livorno venduta dai genovesi ai fiorentini” (Livorno sold by Genoa to Florence).
On the right we can see “Livorno Medicea” (Medicean Livorno).

The Busts in the Council
Eight busts of famous Livornesi are hosted in niches along three walls of the City Council Chamber. The room goes back to the years after World War I and was not originally part of Town Hall proper. It was connected to the main building through a footbridge with a view and was completely refurbished in 1994. Until then the room was facing south, toward the side without busts.

City Council
The first meeting of the new town council took place yesterday, with the oath of the new mayor, Filippo Nogarin. His party, the Five Stars Movement, has an absolute majority of 20 out of 32 seats.
The PD (Democratic Party) has 7 seats, “Buongiorno Livorno” has 3 seats. “Città Diversa”, a civic list, and “Forza Italia”, the only party representing the right, have one seat each.
Stella Sorgente, 32 years, was appointed deputy mayor. Her name in Italian means literally rising star.
Giovanna Cepparello, 46 years, one of the leaders of “Buongiorno Livorno”, was unanimously elected president of the assembly. She is the first female president of our city council.
