We missed this ceremony two years in a row because we were out of town, but we finally got it again.

Last Wednesday the mayor of Livorno, Filippo Nogarin, and the the Admiral Maurizio Ertreo, commander of the Naval Academy, welcomed the delegations of the foreign Navies present to the 32nd TAN with a simple ceremony accompanied by the Navy brass band.

The cadets of every Navy draped their flags on the marble staircase of Town Hall.

31st Naval Academy Trophy

The sailship “Italia” was born in 1993 in a Gdansk shipyard as “Swan fan Makkum”. She is still the largest two-masted sailing vessel in the world, with an overall length of 61 meters. She can carry 1300 square meters of sail and has an impressive air draft of 44 meters.

Since 2006 the boat, renamed “Italia”, is jointly owned and operated by the Italian Navy and the Yacht Club Italiano.

Pandora

This year I didn't see much of the TAN (Naval Academy Trophy) because of our holiday in Rome, but considering these last days, it seems that I didn't miss much. The village and the sail boats have moved out of the Porto Mediceo to a faraway and unwelcoming pier: the tents hosting the shops are a sauna and you can hardly see the boats, moored along a straight stretch of barren quay, often blocked by a huge crane.

This boat was built in 1994 as “Anna” in Karelia, Russia, as a faithful replica of a 18th-century postal vessel sailing the Baltic. A few years ago she was found abandoned and almost sunken near the port of Genoa.

She was salvaged and completely restored by her actual owner: renamed as “Pandora” the barquentine managed to win two Tall Ship Races in 2007 and 2010. She is now a training ship of sorts for students.

Foreign Navies 2012

The delegations of the Navies present to the 29th TAN paraded yesterday on “Via Grande”, gathering then in “Piazza del Municipio” (Town Hall Square) for a simple ceremony. The Navy band was playing all along.Alessandro Cosimi, the mayor of Livorno, was on the balcony of Town Hall with the commander of the Naval Academy, the Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.The cadets of every Navy present at the Trophy were carrying their flags.The marble staircase of Town Hall festooned with flags at the end of the ceremony.The flags were arranged in alphabetical order at the right of the Italian Navy flag, continuing on the other side of the staircase.

Santa Maria

A model in full sail of Christopher Columbus' “Santa Maria”, which, by the way, wasn't a caravel but a carrack. The ship models exhibition is on display at the “Tuttovela” village in occasion of the 29th “Trofeo Accademia Navale” (Naval Academy Trophy), taking place in Livorno in these days.

Swan fan Makkum

In 1993 the 50m long sailship “Swan fan Makkum” was launched in a Gdansk shipyard, becoming the largest brigantine in the world. With 1,300 square meters of sail and a 44-meter air draft she is one of the tallest of the tall ships.She has crossed the Atlantic 18 times, has made regular appearances at major sailing events around the world and competes in at least part of the Tall Ships Race series every year. In 2006 the “Swan fan Makkum” was sold to the Italian Navy and renamed “Italia”. She is now jointly operated by the Navy and the Genoa Yacht Club (Yacht Club Italiano).
