Fiat 508 Balilla

The Fiat 508, better known as Balilla, was the first model of car in Italy affordable for the average person.

The 508 was small, lightweight and easy to drive: in 1937 Fiat produced over 110,000 Balillas.

Santa Maria

A model in full sail of Christopher Columbus' “Santa Maria”, which, by the way, wasn't a caravel but a carrack. The ship models exhibition is on display at the “Tuttovela” village in occasion of the 29th “Trofeo Accademia Navale” (Naval Academy Trophy), taking place in Livorno in these days.

Swan fan Makkum

In 1993 the 50m long sailship “Swan fan Makkum” was launched in a Gdansk shipyard, becoming the largest brigantine in the world. With 1,300 square meters of sail and a 44-meter air draft she is one of the tallest of the tall ships.She has crossed the Atlantic 18 times, has made regular appearances at major sailing events around the world and competes in at least part of the Tall Ships Race series every year. In 2006 the “Swan fan Makkum” was sold to the Italian Navy and renamed “Italia”. She is now jointly operated by the Navy and the Genoa Yacht Club (Yacht Club Italiano).

Some unusual vehicles inside and around the “Tuttovela” village at the 28th TAN: this is called Asquith Old Bus and is a prop for the “Strada del Vino dei Colli di Candia e di Lunigiana” (Wine road of the Candia and Lunigiana Hills).A sidecar parked nearby, with no apparent advertising purpose.A lavender bycicle at the stand of the “La Lavanda del Lago” (The Lavender of the Lake).

You have seen almost nothing of the wares on sale at the shops inside “Tuttovela” (All about sailing) village, mostly sportswear and sportsgear but it was easy to find the odd merchandise either. In this case incredibly scented soap.I don't know what is this, but I'm sure it's delicious!I am not sure if you can buy these, but they can be useful in case of noisy neighbors.We have already seen “Oloferne” and “La Nave di Carta”: one of the nicest bookshops I have ever seen.

I am not an early riser, so when I arrived at the “Porto Mediceo” the “Trofeo Gaetano D'Alesio”, the first rowing competition of the season, was almost finished. I barely managed to watch the last race, the one with the ten-rower “gozzi”.The boat of the quarter “Venezia” won the chronometer race.The boats of the “rioni” (quarters) “Salviano” and “Fabbricotti”.The boats of “Ovo Sodo” (Hard boiled egg) and “San Jacopo”.The boats of “San Marco - Pontino” and “Borgo Cappuccini”.The four-oars “gozzetta” with the ladies from “Salviano”.

Model Boats

We are still at the “village” of the 27th TAN (Naval Academy Trophy) where, in one of the tents, several model boats of any type are on display. This is the submarine “Platino” (Platinum), built during the last war and almost the only survivor of the class “Acciaio” (Steel).The PT-109 is probably one of the most famous boats in the world: her last commander was the junior Lieutenant John F. Kennedy. Her sinking near the Solomon Islands and Kennedy's following actions to save his crew made him a war hero.The “Anteo” was an old fashioned type of tugboat quite common in Italian ports between the wars.

Tired of dollhouses? Try a lighthouse. This is from “L'Arte di Creare” (The Art of Creating), a local shop, and was on display at the “village” of the TAN.
