The funny sign of a “pizzeria” on our “lungomare”.Not exactly by the sea, but still by the water along the canal on the “Scali delle Ancore”.This unusual kind of sign marks a pub facing the “Darsena Nuova” (New Harbor). In background the swing bridge.

Coral Girls
The “Coral Girls” are walking in “Piazza Grande”. The porticos on the left are still the same, the ones on the right were rebuilt after the last war.

Big Anchor
You can find this huge anchor at the “Arena Astra” gym, a former movie theater. It probably came just from across the street: we are in front of the main entrance of the former Orlando Shipyard.

The Bomb
You are probably relatively familiar with this place: it is the last part of the dig for the new canal in Venezia. The work was stopped yesterday when a WWII bomb was found buried there. The 1000-pound device is temporarily sheltered in the dark green tent visible near the orange excavator.

From Above
A guy under a parasol in the basket of a cherry picker? In fact, he is carefully watching another cherry picker from where some people are working on the roof of this building. The other basket is not visible from below, so he is maneuvering it from this vantage position.

MEI
“Gli emigranti” (The Emigrants), a 1895 painting by the Livornese Angiolo Tommasi, was chosen for a commemorative stamp of the Museo Nazionale Emigrazione Italiana (National Museum of the Italian Emigration). The painting shows the pier Federico Guglielmo, in the port of Genoa, where a group of emigrants is patiently waiting for their passage on a steamer.

Ship Lift
A view of the “Darsena Morosini” now part of the Benetti shipyard. The set of blue mechanic arms just beyond the first yacht (the 35m “Johanna”) is the new ship lift, inaugurated last January with its first launch. The other boat is the 46m “Kaleido Beau”.

Cappellina dei Cassieri
This is the maimed statue of the poor archangel on the roof of the “Cappella della Visitazione di Maria e di San Michele Arcangelo” (Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and of Saint Michael Archangel).
Better known with the simpler name of “Cappellina dei Cassieri” (Cashiers' Chapel), it was bult in 1703 with the contribuition of the money changers of Livorno. An inscription was added in 1932 when the building was restored at the expense of Gino Cipriani, a civil engineer, who wanted to honor his wife recently passed away. It says: “Restaurata nel nome e nella memoria di Giuseppina Cipriani Ricci - Anno Domini 1932” (Restored in the name and memory of Giuseppina Cipriani Ricci - Anno Domini 1932).The dome was struck by a lighting in 2009, three days after I took these photos, and the cross had to be removed for safety reasons.
This is quite curious condsidering the original inscrpion in front of the chapel:
Thanks to my friend Silvestro for the translation from Latin.

Largo Bellavista
I took these pictures from the roof terrace of a building in “Largo Bellavista” (Beautiful View Place), a tiny space off “Viale Italia”, where practically our “lungomare” begins. We can see in background our aquarium, some beach resorts and the Nazario Sauro marina. This partly dilapidated structure is the once famous “Scoglio della Regina” (Queen's Rock) beach resort, quite fashionable in the 19th century. The distant line of rocks at sea is the Vegliaia breakwater, protecting the entrance of the port of Livorno. The narrow Bellana shingle beach lies between the “Scoglio” and the whitish seawalls of the “Darsena Morosini”, now part of the Benetti Shipyard. The towering “Fanale dei Pisani” watches the entrance of the port.

A real balcony seen through the set of “La Traviata” on the “Palco Cézanne” (Cézanne stage) in “Piazza XX Settembre”.An absolutely vintage door bell in “Via Micali”.The off-leash dog area in “Piazza della Vittoria”, in background the church of “Santa Maria del Soccorso”.“Scali Saffi”, a badly bent one way traffic sign. The blue bulk of the new multi-level car park where once was the “Cinema Odeon”.
