Culture & Sculpture

The banner says “You don't eat culture, but it sets you free”. This seems to be a paraphrase of John 8:32, which says “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”.Four Moors monument with banner, LivornoA lot of people like to hide themselves behind the word “culture”, a few of them may be right, most of them aren't.
Anyway our “Quattro Mori” (Four Moors) weren't set free by the culture but by the sculpture, if you know the story.

I'm going to check out the story of the Four Moors because you have made me curious.

I think you are correct that people try to hide behind the word "culture."

Culture is like art---only in the eye of the beholder.
The story of the Moors and their freedom is interesting.
You seem always have something to SAY and make us think in your posts.

Really nice post, and thoughtful. An incredible story. I like the baloons next to that funky sign.

I had missed the moors post as I was away in Quimper. Very interesting.

I would not like to live without culture though.

I agree with Ciel - wouldn't like to live without culture even if many people hidden behind this word don't even know what the word means.
Interesting story.

The banner makes no sense to me, at least not with my definition of culture; it is not only hi-brow art, music and literature. But your photos and story of the sculpture over the several posts are very interesting, VP. [I'm taking a tour down your blog, as my time for blogging these past weeks has been very limited... so I won't leave a comment on every one, but I am enjoying them all.]
