Viale Caprera

Viale Caprera, LivornoThis is “Viale Caprera” now and more than a hundred years ago, before the canal was interred in 1898. In the old postcard we can see how the canal followed the median of the street, exactly where are now parked all the cars.Viale Caprera, LivornoA “navicello” is moored on the right of the canal, just before the “Crocetta” bridge, the one that they are going to rebuild after digging the canal again.

Whoa, this can't be progress can it? From a picturesque canal to a bunch of parked cars?

Interesting though.

This is so interesting to me. I love seeing then and now pictures.

How wise to restore the canal. It's going to be grand. ( :

Interesting shots of before and after.

And they call that progress, probably! In Florida we deride such goings-on, calling such a thing "paving over paradise"!

But why would anyone put a consulate in Ocala? (Better late than never)

Nice now versus then on today's posting - lots of differences!

I think the comparison is amazing. I suspect Italians are less prone to tearing down old buildings to replace them with new ones, which is what often happens here in Canada. We don't have the same wonderful feeling for history.

Good god, what a comparision. The place has changed so much! If I see the first picture only I wouldn't even get to know there was a canal over there century ago...

I have to admit it looks good with a canal but I'm sure people are going to scream and ask: "where will we park?".

It is always very interesting to see before and after photos, especially in this case. I suppose the canal would now be like a sewer.
Strange how the present now has trees, yet there are none in the old postcard - usually it would be the other way around.

I love these yesterday and today photos. It's so interesting to look back on things. I feel that European cities tend not to change as much as ours do.

You photographed it at the EXACT same location! Such an impressive comarison. I just love these. I'd opt for the canal but I suppose car park is more useful these days.

It was covered up in 1898? (I just noticed that.)

That's progress! Fill in the canal. Then a century later re-excavate the canal.

This vintage postcard is wonderful!
How did you get it?Fabulous indeed!
The old place looks much more romantic with that canal, anyway it's so interesting see the differences between those pictures.

It looks nice now, but I think it looked better with the canal!
Have a great weekend:)

Grazie.
Questo post evidenzia molto bene come troppo spesso in Italia non ci sia cura del bene ambientale ed urbanistico ereditato dal passato.

That is on the top of all I've seen so far. They covered the water! It is a great metamorphosis. Some people dig chanels, some get rid of the chanels. You did great job. It is very interesting. At first I thought why do they have cars in the water?

I think Cieldequimper has it right.

Now this looks very different because of the change from a canal to a street. But the buildings still look amazingly the same. A lot seems to have disappeared though, which is quite the opposite of what I would have expected!

So many differences here! Much nicer with the canal, in my opinion...

Amazing. Even with the loss of the canal it still looks pretty much the same. Maybe we should all take lessons from the people of Livorno and try to preserve the past
