Leonetto Cappiello

Leonetto Cappiello was born on 9 April 1875 in Livorno. He was an Italian painter and art designer who lived mostly in Paris. He is now often called “the father of modern advertising” because of his innovation in poster design.Cappiello, like other young artists, worked in way that was almost the opposite of his predecessors. He was the first artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters early tradition.In 1898 he moved to Paris, where his caricatures were published for the first time in the humor magazine “Le Rire”. Cappiello made his name during the poster boom of the early 20th century, with creations markedly different from the works of Jules Chéret, the leading poster artist of the time.Cappiello died in Cannes in 1942. Over the course of his career he produced more than 530 advertising posters which surprise and delight the viewer. Today, his original posters are still collected, sold at auctions and by dealers around the world.

Palazzo del Portuale

The “Palazzo del Portuale” (Dockworker's Building) was born as the headquarters of the local dockworkers association, now a group of several port-related companies (Gruppo CPL).It was built in the late 1950s by the architect Giovanni Salghetti Drioli where once was the ancient church of “Sant'Antonio”, torn down after the heavy damages suffered in the last war.The brick cladding of the building matches the nearby “Fortezza Vecchia”. A wide covered terrace faces the “Ampolletta” bastion.

Vespucci's Boats

The “Amerigo Vespucci” is fitted with eleven boats. Astern, there is the typical “whaler” reserved for the Commanding Officer.The four larger motor boats and launches are stored amidship.More boats are hung along the sides and all of these are used for the training of the Cadets.

In this panoramic view from the top of the “Mastio di Matilde” we can see, beyond the ramparts of the “Capitana”, the churches of “San Ferdinando” and “Santa Caterina” and the slender grey line of the modern “Santa Trinita” bridge in foreground.A view of the “Ampolletta” with the recently rebuilt church of “San Francesco”, where, more than four hundreds of years ago, Livorno was formally declared “città”. On the left a glimpse of the “Palazzo Mediceo” and, on the right, of the “Palazzo del Portuale”.
Inside the “Ampolletta” bastion it is easy to see the various levels of the structure, built in different times.The “Canaviglia” topped by the reconstruction of the “Palazzo di Francesco”. The square tower at center of the image is the lower part of the “Torre Quadrata”, the older part of the fortress, which once guarded the Pisan port.
