With the
new bridge the access to the
Fortezza Vecchia is surprisingly easier and we already found it open twice, probably because it was Sunday. After more than five years we were also able to climb to the top of the
Mastio di Matilde (Matilda's Keep), which has an amazing view on the port, the city, and the fortress itself.
The “mastio” seen from the inner courtyard and a view from above of the oldest part of the fortress, the 14th century “Quadratura dei Pisani” (Square Fort of the Pisans).

14th century. Amazing!
It seems almost magical to me to be able to walk around a fort that old!
Great shots VP.
Great view, worth to visit !
What a wonderful place to have so close by. I agree with EG, it does seem a bit magical.
How exciting. And what fantastic views. Hard to believe the fortress is so old!
Impressive to realise that it's been there for so long.
Amazingly ancient, VP! And you got to use the bridge!
Oh I hope you'll go back up there often!
Must be an interesting place and view.
How exciting that you were able to go up there (AND get those pictures)!
