B Like Borgo
An ox head outside a butcher shop in “Piazza Mazzini”. Well before the “A” for Attias, we already had a “B” for “Borgo”, a consortium of business activities in and around “Borgo dei Cappuccini”.

Left Behind
With so many Santas around these days it is inevitable that some of them, after Christmas, are left behind in shops, public spaces or even hanging in awkward poses out of windows.

The New Attias
In addition to the big red “A”, the renewed “Piazza Attias” has some quite interesting new benches.

The Big Red A
The new “Piazza Attias” with sparse benches and a big red “A”: the last one left of Italy's credit rating or memories of a lost “Serie A” (First Division) for the local football team?

Three Years of PowerShots
Exactly three years ago we posted our first photo of Livorno on this blog. On our third anniversary it is time to honor our modest tools: I took most of these pictures with the camera above, a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS, which I have been using since December 2009.
On the left a slightly younger me is sitting near a bollard in the “Porto Mediceo”, holding my older camera, a PowerShot SX3. On the right Trillian is posing at La Défense with another PowerShot, her SX5.
On the occasion we would also like to thank and salute all our friends, followers and fellow bloggers for their support: may you always find something interesting in these pages!

The Two Towers
Around the half of the 19th century this tower was part of a wall between the Lazaretto (quarantine station) of San Rocco and the “Nuova Porta a Mare” (New Gate to the Sea). Now it stands alone, just outside the former Orlando Shipyard, awaiting an inclusion of sort in the new residential area already in construction where once the workshops were.In this detail of a view of Livorno from L'Italie à vol d'Oiseau (A bird's eye view of Italy) by Alfred Guesdon (circa 1850) you can easily spot the rounded shape of the tower between the two bridges, in the lower right part of the lithography. In the lower left part of the same image you can find this square tower when it was still facing the sea. The structure is now firmly inland, just outside the Benetti Yachts shipyard.A detail of the same area from a map of Livorno published in Rome around 1860.

Liburna
You can see this shield on the corner of “Via dell’Angiolo” and “Via delle Galere”. It is on the building of the “KinoDessé” movie theater and represents a stylized Liburna, a small galley, used as a symbol by our Chamber of Commerce.

I saw this horseshoe in “Via Ricasoli”: it has probably something to do with the Holidays and good luck, but it is hard to decipher completely...

Caged Emperor
Pietro Leopoldo was Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1765 to 1790 and then Holy Roman Emperor from 1790 to 1792. His monument, a work of the sculptor Andrea Pelliccia, is caged by wire mesh on the left of the church of San Jacopo in Acquaviva. It is easy to guess what is he thinking...
