Model Boats

Submarine Platino (Platinum), class “Acciaio” (Steel), Livorno. We are still at the “village” of the 27th TAN (Naval Academy Trophy) where, in one of the tents, several model boats of any type are on display. This is the submarine “Platino” (Platinum), built during the last war and almost the only survivor of the class “Acciaio” (Steel). The PT-109 is probably one of the most famous boats in the world: her last commander was the junior Lieutenant John F. Kennedy. Her sinking near the Solomon Islands and Kennedy's following actions to save his crew made him a war hero. The “Anteo” was an old fashioned type of tugboat quite common in Italian ports between the wars.

These are gorgeous models. I'd love to spend some time wandering through that tent...As I recall, though, those PT boats weren't really worth much...Kennedy was lucky to have survived!

These are really nice. I recognized the PT boat right away but I like the tugboat best.

The first photo is so nice.
Big models. Some people must have devoted a lot of time and love to crafting them.
As a kid I was always piecing together model airplanes and a boat or two.

I love that little tugboat, and I'll bet it had real brass on it, too. Nice to see a model of PT 109. I've seen only pictures. You're encouraging me to to inside the Maritime Museum, where I haven't been for a few years. Not that I'm cheap :) but I've found that I can get a year's pass for a reasonable amount, so now I won't worry about not photographing everything at one time. I'll get a pass and go back often.

These are very good models. I prefer the real things though.
