The Facade of the Duomo
The Cathedral of San Francesco (Saint Francis), the “Duomo” of Livorno, stands in what is now Piazza Grande, at the center of the Pentagonal City devised by the architect Bernardo Buontalenti (1536-1608). The Cathedral preserves many features of the original building, erected between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 17th Century by Alessandro Pieroni and Antonio Cantagallina.

Praticamente ricostruito dopo l'ultima guerra, il Duomo conserva molte caratteristiche dell'edificio originale, costruito fra la fine del XV e l'inizio del XVII secolo da Antonio Cantagallina e Alessandro Pieroni.

A Gallery and a Museum
The bishop of Livorno has recently announced the intention of transforming the small porticoes on the sides of our Cathedral in a permanent gallery and a diocesan museum of sorts.

Saint Francis
Our Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Francis, represented in this stained glass window on the apse of the church. The windows were lightened up on Christmas Eve for the Midnight Mass.

Largo del Duomo
The back of our Cathedral in Largo del Duomo. For a few years, before the Second World War, the apse was decorated by a monumental fountain.

Works around the Cathedral
The area around the Cathedral has been closed for works related to a new Piazza Grande.
One of the upsides of this is that you can at least take all the pictures you want without people around.

Santa Maria Assunta
There is much more to see in Pisa than just the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), but we will start from there. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (St. Mary of the Assumption) lies in the middle of the wonderful square, also known as Piazza del Duomo. “Duomo” is another term for “Cattedrale” (Cathedral).

Marco Alessandro del Borro
The Arezzo-born Marco Alessandro del Borro was a quite popular governor of Livorno from 1678 to 1701. He promoted the expansion of the Venezia Nuova quarter, whose main street is named after him: “Via Borra”. His funerary monument inside the Cathedral was realized by the sculptor Giovan Battista Foggini, but it was badly damaged by the WWII air raids.

Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel
The altar of the “Cappella del Santissimo Sacramento” (Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel) in our Cathedral: the altarpiece is “Cristo coronato di spine” (Christ Crowned with Thorns), painted by Fra Angelico around 1440.

Inside the Cathedral
The interior of the “Duomo”, rebuilt after its almost total destruction during the war, has a relatively simple and modern appearance.
The boxlike space is graced by the surviving pieces of the old cathedral recovered from the ruins and by the artworks which were stored elsewhere for safekeeping during wartime.
The “altare maggiore” (major altar) seen from the transept. On the exterior of the apse once stood the “Fontana del Duomo” (Cathedral's Fountain).
