The Fresnel Lens

Fanale dei Pisani, lighthouse, port of Livorno
After the restoration works the lighthouse is at last free of the scaffolding. Here is a detail of the recently repainted top, with the Fresnel lens clearly visible inside the lantern.

Reminds me of the work recently completed on both the Hatteras and Bodie lighthouses in North Carolina.

Beautifully restored lighthouse. They look fine even though they are no longer needed for navigation, they are a romantic link with the past.

This is certainly a big improvement.

Can you imagine a camera lens that big?

Ah, it is beautiful!

Decades ago I had a tour in the very top of the Grosse Point lighthouse just north of Chicago and I remember how exciting it was to see the huge lens up close.
The tower was built in the 1870s. Today it is a park and museum and has the only remaining second-order Fresnel lens on the Great Lakes.

It looks great! Santa Marta Lighthouse at Cascais has now a museum in which one room is full of lens on display. I was totally amazed by the beauty and SIZE of them.

Fresnel lenses have always literally fascinated me, especially when you can see them up close... Not that I can walk up to the lens of any lighthouse at the moment!
