It looks almost like a giant lego ship. These are wonderful shots.

Guess it is a matter of the 'within', and not always of size.

Surely an impressive sight. All the very best for its journey, and a good Friday for you as well.

Wow I have never seen anything this large in person before. Great shots.

Having an active freight business in Livorno's port must be good for the local economy. For you, scenes like this are normal. For others like Randy and me, who don't see freight movement very often, the scene is unusual.

Great shot! I really like how all the boxes are piled on top of each other! Looks like they're going to be at sea for awhile :-)

I wonder what she's transporting; looks like a heavy load.

Not that's a HUGE ship! You could load a lot of Italian shoes on a boat like that!!
Hope you're off to a good start to 2011!

The tug is as wide as it is long?! I'd love to be on board a working tug for a day.
Container ships always amaze me. They look top-heavy, like they would topple over in a big wave.

@ Jack - While the Opal was leaving, two more container ships were waiting to enter, but ferries and car carriers are also important now.
Larger container ships (around 300 meters) still have problems negotiating the relatively shallow canal leading to the cargo port.

@ Dina - No square tugs here, I hope it is more clear now...

Lots of effort must have gone in to "weight and balance". It is HUGE!:)

Some great photos of the container ship. Gets me thinking about a William Gibson novel I read a few years ago.
