Ampolletta

Ampolletta, Fortezza Vecchia, LivornoThe “Ampolletta” (Small ampoule) bastion still looks relatively intact. Its name probably comes from the diminutive term for the hourglass keeping the time of the fortress.Ampolletta, Fortezza Vecchia, LivornoThis marble lion head is a replica of a bronze one where the galleys used to moor, the originals is now kept in the entrance hall of the Province of Livorno.Ampolletta, Fortezza Vecchia, LivornoA view of the the eastern side of the bastion, the “Porta del Duca” is on the right.coat of arms of Jean II Le Maingre, called BoucicautThe coat of arms of Jean II Le Maingre, called Boucicaut, Marshal of France, appointed Governor of Genoa by Charles VI in 1401.Ampolletta, Fortezza Vecchia, LivornoBetween the “Ampolletta” and the “Canaviglia” (in background) is visible a small jetty called “Molo del Soccorso” (Relief Pier).

Wow this place is amazing but I think I like the one from the other day more. I would still love to see them both.

It does have the hourglass shape to it, doesn't it.

It looks remarkably well preserved given it's location. They sure knew how to build them.

Wonderful structure! Glad it's more preserved than the Capitana, but I like them both.

This fort is really spectacular.

You should show us the original brass lions sometime. I'd love to see them.

Funny. My eyes and my brain won't agree on where the water surface is in the first photo (and whether parts of it is in fact a reflection).

These are wonderful. I like the lion best. I still think the water is at a different level than it really is and the bottom half of the bastion is a reflection.

This place has seen some action. I like how the plants grow out of the walls.
