Happy Birthday

Livorno Centrale railway stationOne of my Stefano friends just reminded me that our main railway station, “Livorno Centrale”, will be one hundred years old today.Old postcard, Railway bridge under construction, Ardenza, LivornoThe station was built when, in the first decade of the 2oth century, Livorno was linked through Vada, a seaside village where my family comes from, to the coastal trunk line for Rome.Old postcard, piazza Carlo Alberto, LivornoHow this old postcard shows, there was a great celebration then, with lights along the main streets and squares. The ceremony took place with the partecipation of the King, Vittorio Emanuele III.Bench, Livorno Centrale railway stationThe tracks today, with a bench ready for another blog of mine.

Will they throw a birthday party?
Great history here. Enjoyed your linked post too.
Wish I could be on the train entering Livorno Centrale.

When I was young I went on Inter-rail. So these photos brought back some memories. Do the trains in Italy run on time??

Congrats to all who were involved in this. I get so jealous over the kind of transportation available in Europe...we just don't have anything like it!

Thanks for sharing those old postcards, too.

Happy Birthday to the train station. Look at those lovely benches in the postcard.
You must have a huge collection of postcards. They are great history. MB

@ MB - Some have maintenance problems but, after a century, most of those benches are still there: Closed Bench.

Hi VP! Re your comment/question on Ocala DP: The gentleman could probably buy 6 or 7 nice golf cars for the price of this regular car.

Once again, excellent reporting of history. I love the old benches and station.

That's lovely that people actually recognize the station's birthday! But it doesn't look that old at all :-)

I love the illuminazione artistica, just like Christmas.

Lille is well worth a day trip.

I have spent many hours on trains in Italy. But not here I'm afraid.
