Viale Italia

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoEverybody would love a house with a turret, even better if from there we can see the sea...Liberty villas, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoOn four blocks on the “Viale Italia”, just in front of the “Accademia Navale”, we have a dozen of nicely turreted villas in Eclectic style, built around the 1930s and projected by Fosco Cioni, a capable designer without any official qualification.Old postcard, Liberty villas, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoIn this case the postcard is only seventy years old and the angle slightly different, but almost everything else remains the same.

Only a few changes over the years. The architect or architects knew what they were oing and did it right.

I'd love a turret on my house! What a fun place to relax and have some quiet time!

Beautiful images here, Trillian. The colors, the detail, the long shot, the historic shot...really good post.

Yes, the match is so close. The cars certainly change the feeling, though. These buildings are fantastic. The architect did an amazing job of bringing the elements into harmony.

I saw the top photo in a thumbnail and was immediately attracted - not only by the form, but the colors are so striking with the dark sky. Just perfect.

A turret with a sea view. It doesn't get much better than that.
Nice shots!

Interesting post, and the top photo is my favorite.

I would love for sure!
Strange that it looks almost the same as seventy years ago.

Love that turret. Clinging to the past is very un-American - all that would be blown up ages ago (and the Sistine Chapel, too) - but it is so lovely. I guess they build to last in Italy.

Wow, that street has Turret Syndrome. ;)

I like so much when you put these two pictures from different time, so we can appreciate it a lot and see all differences!
Thanks a lot! :)
Once in my life I lived in a building ( an ordinary, commun one, not special like this one with a " turret" ) but I had the view of the beautiful blue ocean from my balcony, it was a time when I lived in Florianópolis ( South of Brazil ) and it was really inspiring...And your pictures are also inspiring, really beautiful!

A turret would be nice, although not sure if my neighbors would agree!

I really enjoy seeing historical photographs and comparing them to what things look like now! It does look practically the same except for the cars.

Handsome villas!
Don't you just wish those old trams were still around though?

Oh, and nice to see you posting again, Trillian! I hope that means you're done with your writing?

I've always wanted a house with a turret. Let me know if it becomes available.

A turret with a view of the sea - wow!! I adore old architecture - the details and the fact that it stands sooo long after construction, makes you wonder about the architects and builders of yesteryear!
have agrat weekend!

I would love a turret, especially one open to the air, with a sea view, on a street like that! How interesting to see it with the old photo (and old car.) Nice shots, thanks.

Thank you for these, Trillian. What beautiful buildings! I would love a turret from which to overlook the sea. Alas, our new villa has no turret!

Amazing how these structures have withstood the ravages of time.

And they are individual residences? For the very wealthy?

They also go to show that sometimes "official qualification" is not necessary to create magnificence!

A turret - how romantic. And with a sea view too. I wish I had one.
Cheers.

It was taken with different focal length :). You have a wonderful collection of old postcards.

The comparison is astounding. 70 years and looks perfect. Wish I'd age that well. Goes to show that good maintenance pays off ;D

PS - excellent job on getting the same view! Sad that the trolley cars are gone. Seems that the early Palos Verdes architects used this style in the late '20s.
