Unknown Sculpture

Unknown sculpture by unknown author, Natural History Museum, Villa Henderson, Via Roma, Livorno
Unknown sculpture by unknown author, Natural History Museum, Via Roma. This is a deliberately polemic caption. Last year I was able to find in a few minutes the title, the author, and a short history of a statue photographed in Minsk in 1996. In three months I could not find anything on this one, which is in the park of a museum in Livorno. (Already posted on Instagram)

Bruno Gregoretti

Museum ship Bruno Gregoretti, Andana degli Anelli, port of Livorno
The “Bruno Gregoretti” (CP 312) has been a Coast Guard cutter for almost thirty years. Dismissed in 2008, the boat was recently restored and it is now moored at the Andana degli Anelli, inside the Porto Mediceo, as a museum ship.

She was originally built in Germany as a 23-meter ‘Seenotrettungskreuzer’ (rescue boat), and the refurbished cruiser bears her original and quite unusual livery.

Museo Fattori

This slightly dilapidated building is Villa Mimbelli, an 19th century residence surrounded by a beautiful park, not far from the Terrazza Mascagni. Yesterday's turtles live in a fountain at the entrance of this park. Since 1994 the villa hosts the “Museo civico Giovanni Fattori” with its interesting collection of works of the Livornese painter, along with many other works by fellow Macchiaioli and other local artists.
Museo Fattori, Villa Mimbelli, Livorno
A few days ago in the course of a debate at a local newspaper, one of the candidates for mayor of Livorno said that the Fattori Museum is one of the most visited in Europe, but only we aren't able to realize this. This bold statement went unchallenged by anyone present.

Domus Mazziniana

Facade of the Domus Mazziniana, via Mazzini, Pisa
This is the house where Giuseppe Mazzini spent the last years of his life and where he died on 10 March 1872. Practically rebuilt after the damages of the Second World War, it is now a museum dedicated to his life and works: the lettering on the facade of the building represent the verbose oath of the Giovine Italia (Young Italy), written by Mazzini himself in 1831 in Marseille.

Gino's Museum

We have already met the “cantina”, usually a former storeroom or workshop right on the canals where, in other times, crafstmen of any trade worked on boats of any type. Most of these premises, now owned by the government, are given in concession to groups or clubs, usually with some kind of nautical purpose. One of the most interesting “cantine” in town was visited by my friend Giampaolo, who took these pictures for us.This “cantina” is a museum of sorts created and kept by a “signor Gino” who, along the years, collected and salvaged any kind of objects related to the “Palio”, the sea and Livorno. The objects are artfully arranged in ordered displays around a long table where social dinner are held.We can see old carpenter tools, posters, nautical chests, oars, buoys and, if you look carefully, few racks of vintage “fiaschi”, our typical wine bottles covered with straw.
