Pegaso 2

Pegaso 2 helicopter, AgustaWestland AW-139, hospital of Livorno
“Pegaso 2” is the code name of one of the three HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) aircaft of the Regione Toscana. This one is based in Grosseto, while the other helicopters are based in Florence and Massa. This shot was taken from one of my windows, almost a kilometer away, while the AgustaWestland AW139 was landing on the helipad of our hospital.

The Old Hospital

Hospital, viale Alfieri, Livorno
The hospital of Livorno was built in the 1930s and the construction of a new one on the hills of Antignano was one of the most controversial projects of the old administration. The choice of the location at the southern end of the city, with only secondary roads and no public transportation, can't be explained.
Hospital, via Gramsci, Livorno
At the same time a lot of money was spent refurbishing the old hospital, which has plenty of open space where to build new, modern structures and is within walking distance for a great part of the Livornesi. The new mayor was a vocal opponent of the unpopular project and is now willing to stop it.

Works of Mercy

These are two medallions representing the Corporal Works of Mercy, they are placed on the external wall of the “Spedali Riuniti”, the city hospital of Livorno, in Viale Alfieri.
To visit the sick medaillon, City hospital, Livorno
We can easily expect that “curare gli infermi” (to heal the sicks) should be a pertinent act for any self-respecting clinic. By the way, Matthew (25:36) speaks only of visiting the sicks, which is comfortably easier for those of us with no medical background.
To clothe the naked medaillon, City hospital, Livorno
A little more curious is the medallion about “vestire gli igniudi” (to clothe the naked), even spelled with an unnecessary i, but probably it is there only to make a pair.

Spedali Riuniti

City Hospital, Livorno“Spedali Riuniti” (United Hospitals) is a denomination that was given in 1898 to the “Complesso ospedaliero di Sant'Antonio”, as the adminstrative reunion of a plethora of small hospitals in and around the former prison called “Bagno dei Forzati”.
[Bing Maps image]
The old structure was not the place for a modern hospital so in the late 1920s a new one was built on the city outskirts on a project by the architect Ghino Venturi. Built in the years of the Fascist Era, the building was inaugurated by the King himself in 1931.Galeazzo Ciano coat of armsIt was dedicated to the local Fascist leader Costanzo Ciano, whose coat of arms still hang on the side of the main entrance.City Hospital, LivornoThe administrative building facing “Viale Alfieri”. It seems the time has come for this hospital either, a new one will be built near “Montenero”, pending the results of an upcoming abrogative referendum.
