Sub tuum praesidium

A plaque outside a small chapel in Borgo dei Cappuccini. Sub tuum praesidium (Beneath Thy Protection) is the oldest preserved extant hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Theotokos, or Mother of God.

Una targa all'esterno di una piccola cappella in Borgo dei Cappuccini. Il Sub tuum praesidium (Sotto la Tua Protezione) è il più antico tropàrion devozionale cristiano a Maria, Madre di Gesù.

Sotto la Tua protezione cerchiamo rifugio, Santa Madre di Dio: non disprezzare le suppliche di noi che siamo nella prova, ma liberaci da ogni pericolo, o Vergine gloriosa e benedetta.

We fly to Thy protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Cappella degli Spedali Riuniti

The chapel of San Giuseppe is part of the hospital complex of the Spedali Riuniti (United Hospitals), built in the 1930s on a project of the architect Ghino Venturi.

The stained glass windows of the chapel are a work of Athos Rogero Natali, the elder brother of the well-known Livornese painter Renato Natali.

A friend let me have a look at this room inside the “Palazzo di Giustizia” (Courthouse) of Livorno. Some restoration works are still going on and it will be probably used as a conference room.This was the Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier when these buildings were owned by the Company of Jesus. It was opened in 1707 and was used until 1773, when the Order was suppressed.There was an external entrance from “Via della Madonna”, which is just outside the windows on the right side of the room.
