Welcome to the Fortress

Fortezza Nuova, Livorno
When you pass the gate at the entrance of the Fortezza Nuova, this is what awaits you.
Fortezza Nuova, Livorno
On your right you have a battery of firing slits, once used to protect the entrance.
Fortezza Nuova, Livorno
The (closed) gate on the right would give you access to a walkway outside the walls and along the canal.

The left tunnel brings you in the heart of the fortress, which is now the public park.

Interesting how similar this architecture is to Ft. Monroe in Virginia built in the early 19th century.

What a grand, old structure.

Livorno is fortunate to have the fortress within the city, both for its history and for its current use as a park. Nice tour, VP.

What a great looking fortress. Your photos suggest sharply dressed soldiers defending this fortress with cross bows and hand weapons.

Fascinating! I would guess the place is used for filming movies, too.

Love how they did and lit the tunnel. Now I'm imagining the place several centuries ago, bustling with military activity...

I'd guess when this place was fully armed it would have been difficult to breach. A massive and most interesting place. It reminds me a little bit of the old Spanish fort in St. Augustine, Florida.

So big and strong. Impressive!
I'd like to take the grandkids to play there and let the imagination take off.
