Sailing Gozzo

Gozzo a vela, Fosso Reale, LivornoA tract of the “Fosso Reale” just before passing below “Piazza della Repubblica”, practically a 220 meter wide bridge. Amidst all the white fiberglass motor boats you can see what seems a refurbished “gozzo a vela”, a wooden boat rigged with a triangular lateen sail.Gozzi a vela, AntignanoMore or less a century ago, the same kind of boats returning to the “moletto” (jetty) of Antignano after a day of fishing.

The wood boat does indeed present quite a contrast to the sleek new white boats. I am not enough of a boater to choose which I would like, but purely on looks, give me the wooden one.

I agree with Farmchick. I love them both.

Something about the angle of the furled sail evokes a bygone era.
The bridge has a fine decoration.

The wooden boat tell a story all by itself. But still a good shot. MB

A nice shot! Like the boats.
I guess I would have gone for a white boat, not because my surname is White, only because they look stylish and perhaps also comfortable.

Happy Weekend!

Your post always delight me, esp. when you feature boats and ships.

Interesting, VP! Could it be that the name of the Gozo Island in Malta comes from this "gozzo"?

Love the gozzo a vela, the beautiful bridge and that green water of the Livorno canals.

I'm not a sailor, so I cannot speak to function, but for form I'm choosing the wood one. I like how you show the present together with the past, VP.
