Orti Urbani

Urban vegetable gardens, via Goito, Livorno
Last summer a group of citizens has occupied and cleaned a vacant lot in Via Goito, with the purpose of organizing a community vegetable garden: the “Orti Urbani”.

Some of them are pensioners, a few are unemployed, others are simply fans of horticulture.

The group has created more than fifty plots of land, each one assigned to one or more people. They also have a well on the lot, so they can use its water for irrigation.

Most of the plots are thriving, but the owners of the land are not happy with this because they claim to have plans and permits to build on at least a part of it.

As an inglish speaking member of the Livorno Orchards, I would be honored to talk with the blogs author about the actual Livorno urban situation and why Livorno has no need to build more apertmant housing complexes and other underlining reasons why we are doing what we are doing; so that you can better explain to those that are not of italian extract what is happaning in Livorno.....come to the orchard in via goito ask for John, if I am not there, someone will point you in my direction, until we meet , enjoy

John - You are right and I already know a bit more than I wrote about this situation, but this is a photo blog and my captions are rarely more than that. I usually try to insert some local facts here and there, but some are not easy to explain... I will keep posting about the Orchards, and your help would be appreciated.
