The 290 meter “Star Princess” was built in 2002 by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, Italy. A cigarette left burning on a balcony almost destroyed this ship in 2006, while en route from Grand Cayman to Montego Bay, after departing Fort Lauderdale. The fire caused scorching damage in up to 150 cabins, and smoke damage in at least 100. A passenger died and thirteen others suffered from significant smoke inhalation. The ship was repaired and refitted at the Lloyd Werft shipyards in Bremerhaven, sprinklers were added to all balconies and the plastic furniture was replaced with non-combustible alternatives.

I would like to take a trip on this vessel. What a beautiful ship.
A magnificent ship - it's hard to imagine the damage one cigarette but could cause!
The top photo makes a handsome repetitive pattern of shape and color. And, your bottom photo is marvelously composed. It could be used in advertisements for the shipyard.
These images are amazing VP. Love the contrast. Thanks for the info.
Your text gave me a flash back to what happened to " Scandinavian Star".....
Anyway, a very big ship.
I have only been on one from Oslo to Kiel, so I guess to be a passenger here for a week or two must be different. Have you been on one ?
- Have a nice weekend!
That is one big ship. Nice shots and interesting post.
A sad and scary story but a good impetus to making safety improvements.
That last photo is awesome!
what a fabulous final image you leave us with today.
Interesting history of this ship. I also like the last image, those clouds could be mistaken for smoke!
Love the repeating patterns in the top one. That is quite a story. So sad!

Un incidente assurdo per una nave da crociera...fotograficamente parlando, interessante la geometria nella prima foto! Ciao, Arianna
Hard to imagine one cigarette butt could even make an impact on such a huge vessel. Last shot is very impressive VP.
She is beautiful! Hope no one will leave the cigarette this time!
WOW at the top shot! I thought it was a building... :-)
The close up shots of the windows are fabulous! What a grand ship!
