Micropoles

Micropoles, Venice new canal, LivornoThis ungainly contraption is a drill used for something called “micropoles”. We are in “Viale Caprera” and they are beginning the preliminary work for the re-digging of the old interred canal.Micropoles, Venice new canal, LivornoThis summer they traced the old parapets, now they are drilling holes into them before pouring the concrete “spikes”. The scope is to consolidate the sides before the actual digging starts.Micropoles, Venice new canal, LivornoYou can guess the length of these “spikes” from the pipe mounted on the drill in the first image, something around twelve meters.Micropoles, Venice new canal, LivornoStrange to imagine that everything between the two digs will be a canal full of water, sooner or later.

This is another nice series showing scenes of life from Livorno. I wish I was a little less shy so I could take photographs like these. Maybe this canal will come out nicer than the one dug a few years ago.

These are lovely shots, VP, an a nie series, as always. When I enlarge them, I feel like I'm right there. I love the reflections of the water. And, I know this project is dear to your heart, so I'm sure you'll keep us well informed!

Fascinating stuff, VP! I'm guessing that the "micropoles" will be used to stabilize the frame of the canal in some way?

How do you know so much about this business?

But it's nice 'cause when the canal is finished you can put your boat in it!

Another canal? Is traveling faOr perhaps this is for tourism. I'm intrigued!ster by boat than by car? Or is this an urban renewal project?

I'm so excited about the restoration of this canal and I'd never have known about it if not for you!

This is also a great opportunity to document this uncovering of the old canal and catch a lot of good old work pictures. Engineering jobs like this always pique my interest.

I can see a lot of 'before and after' pictures coming. Sounds like it's going to be a mess for quite awhile.

Interesting how they do it. And I absolutely love the idea of redigging a lost canale!

But I wonder why reopen an old canal? What will it be used for? This is a huge expense.

Perfect daily grind photoreportage. Sounds noisy though, I imagine the people around are pleased.

VP said...

@ Julie - No, we absolutely do not need another canal.
@ Ilse - Probably we could fix many other problems with all that money.

It's also strange to imagine the street as once being water, and then filled in!

An interesting bit of civil engineering. Are the metal tubes pounded into the ground, or are they just pushed in?

Hmmm... it's too bad they couldn't make these machines a little more attractive. Hope all the work turns out well though!

I can easily imagine the noise!...

Amazing. For each endeavor, there's a suitable machine.

This is a very interesting series! Why is it that they are doing this? Is it archaeological or practical? I'm confused.

Please keep us updated with the progress, it looks fascinating.

That must be noisy !!!!
God documentary shots!

Don't you have enough canals already? What is this? Venice?
Love the gray sky in the last photo - different weather makes for interesting colors.

In Bulgaria they first put brand new pavement on the street so it is nice and pretty for a couple of months then they call the destroyers like this. Hope you guys do it in the right order :)

Impressive machinery.

I know you don't like having another canal so I am sure you are going to hate all the bother this construction will cause for some time.
