The stretch of coastal road from Livorno to Quercianella follows the ancient Roman route of the “
Via Aurelia” and is known as “Il Romito”. The “Castello del Boccale” (Boccale Castle) lies off the road, few miles south of Antignano, in a place called “Cala dei Pirati” (Pirates Cove) or “Boccale”.
Built as an old Medicean watchtower, it was transformed in a Neo-Medieval residence at the end of the 19th Century.
After a long period of neglect, the building was recently restored and divided into apartments. A small tower built in the park is used for storage. I'd like to thank my friend Paolo who drove us along the coast.

Looks very picturesque, very beautiful. Nice weather for October, I see lots of people sunbathing on the rocks.
What a nice place and beautiful building!
Very impressive location! I imagine that those apartments must be expensive. Who wouldn't want to live in a castle with a magnificent view?
This is a bit different for you...and I really like it. A fascinating building...wonder what those apartments are like. I can imagine they are very, very expensive!
Beautiful photos, VP... In the last one it appears a young couple is gathering the sun's rays!
What a wonderful drive that must have been. Kudos to your friend, Paolo!
That is just gorgeous. I love it. Thanks for sharing.
That looks like a wonderful places.
Your pictures show it in all of it's glory on the cliff.
Magnificent. Imagine what it would be like to live in such a place. It makes me dream.
I would do with apartment in place like that:)

I especially like the sunbathers. A beautiful place to swim, also.
This building and the location are just stunning. And . . . too weird. I swear I didn't look at it before making today's Astoria post!!! So add one more to my list: Italian pseudo-medieval mansion on the coast. So there's a technicality. Your corner cupolas reach the ground.
I can definitely see myself living here.
Very impressive castle!!!and very nice szhots :)
Vogon, these photos are beautiful! Yeah, it would be pretty cool to own an apartment there.
very nice post and pictures! full of history and natural beauty.
A stunning photo and a grand spot to live.!!! Super! I love it--were there pirates at Pirate's cove?
Postcard stuff. What a view and imagine watching the sea for invadors... from Corsica. No, sorry, I got that wrong! ;-) So now you've duplicated the blog into Italian, how did you do that? And I like the new header.
@ ciel - More postcard stuff coming...
To duplicate the blog you have to create a new one, copy the HTML of the images and write the new text. You are already doing the second part, which is the more boring.
For the old posts you could export/import the whole blog to the new one and simply delete the English text.
An apartment in a castle, what'll they think of next! Mowing the lawn doesn't seem to be much of a problem either. Well done, Paolo.
Not too shabby :) I like the pirates touch of the story!
I'd love to have an apartment there...it must be magical?!
That's some apartments - wow. Italy is so beautiful.
I absolutely love anything that's close to a beach or any water body! These are some really breathtaking shots!

Gorgeous little castle and what a location!
@ VP: No, that's too complicated for me! ;-)
The Tirrenian coast is one of best things in Italy!
Thanks for this wonderful series!
Fantastic view, a great building and excellent photos. I'm running out of superlatives so I will stop here.
Oh, you're right! I'd forgotten about that link you sent.
Fab shots! I'd love to visit this place one day :-)
