A view of “Piazza della Repubblica” from the “Scali Bettarini”: in foreground our “sailing gozzo”.The square a century ago, when it was “Piazza Carlo Alberto”.“Il Voltone” (the big vault) was once the popular name of “Piazza della Repubblica”. Beyond the two hundred meter tunnel you can see the “Fortezza Nuova”, on the other side of the square.

These are excellent VP. It is great to see the old image.
I like the contrast between a century ago and today! Lots of boats today and only one small boat a century ago. The building look very much the same on the outside (probably not on the inside)! And the piazza very much the same! At least it hasn't been torn down to put up a high rise which what so many developers in the USA want to do! I believe in Italy there is more respect for age and tradition!
The contrast of time is wonderful.
Can we go for a boat ride?
I agree with Farmchick and Luis, however like it in the old days without all the boats.
Fantastic bridge. Great shots.
Sydney - City and Suburbs
This is a good history lesson, showing us the current scene and an identical scene from one hundred years earlier. Not much has changed except more boats today. Livorno is pretty.
Amazing! Almost identical. The 'big vault' indeed. thanks for the comparison. MB
No change from b&w to colour.
Your 200 m shot is brilliant.
Very interesting seeing the two views. The modern time adds several boats in the scenery, but both are magnificent pictures!

It's very similar with a canal I've seen in Trieste.
The zone is not much changed these days in comparison with the old photo, only the boats are different :)
I always love it when bloggers offer contrasts of the same or similar scenes. A little history lesson along with it is always appreciated, too. I agree with all of the forementioned comments about the contrast between yesterday and today.
You are so good at composing these historical reflections.
I'm amazed to see how little it has changed! I think that's GREAT!
Not much has changed and that is really cool!
Excellent shots. I like the way the bridge underpass makes a frame on the last one.
That's a long and low tunnel to sail through.
I join the chorus: super then and now shots, VP!
