Beyond an inner gate with a massive double door, a ramp with side steps leads to the upper level of the fortress.
The church of “Santa Lucia Vergine e Martire” (Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr) is located not far from the via Aurelia in the quarter of Banditella, Antignano.
The church was dedicated and inaugurated in October 1998.
In front of the church we can see an olive tree representing the Passion and a palm tree as symbol of the Resurrection.
The main gate of the fortress, with a massive arch in stone of Vada, is adjacent to the “Ampolletta” bastion, which offers better cover and protection.
Once called “Porta del Duca” (Duke's Gate), a marble coat of arms still stands above the arch.
Barely legible now on the plaque below: “Sotto una Fede et Legge un Signor solo” (Under one Faith and Law, one Lord) the motto of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

The fortress was once completely surrounded by water and this ramp, where once was the “Scalo Regio” (Royal Landing), was the only access to the main gate.
To link this landing to the other side, a boat was towed back and forth from the fortress.
In this archive shot, taken from the fortress side, we can see a boat that was used sometimes for the same purpose. Sadly, the last time I saw it, it was almost sunk...
