Ten Years

Mercato Centrale (Central Market), Livorno
Our blog is ten year old today. This photo of the Mercato Centrale (Central Market) is practically the same one of the first post, even if taken with a newer camera by an older guy, who doesn't live nearby anymore.
Oggi il nostro blog compie dieci anni. Questa foto del Mercato Centrale è praticamente la stessa del primo post, anche se scattata con una macchina fotografica più nuova da una persona più vecchia, che non vive più da quelle parti.

Theme Day: Entry

Mercato Centrale, Central Market seen from the Fosso Reale, Livorno
Our Mercato Centrale has several doors at street level and two ramps on the sides that descend into its underground storerooms. Another way to access the storage area is a gate at water level on the canal.

Only tourists on some boat tours now use this entrance, when they make a stop to visit the building.

Market Panorama

Taking pictures from my terrace is quite convenient, especially in summer. Obviously the only subject available, with the exception of passing aircraft and resting gulls, is the Mercato Centrale (Central Market).

Stitching photos together to make a panorama is something new to me and this is one of my first efforts, concocted from three different and slightly overlapping shots.

Above the Skylight

Boom lift above the roof of the Central Market, LivornoThese brave guys are hovering above the skylight of the “Mercato Centrale” in the basket of a huge cherry picker. They are probably checking the state of the roof, made of Eternit boards, hence the protective gear.Cherry picker on the roof of the Central Market, LivornoThe truck parked on the side of the “Mercato Centrale”.Maneuvering the boom lift of a huge cherry picker, LivornoFrom below, a co-worker is carefully maneuvering the boom lift.

Graffiti Again

Erasing graffiti from the wall of the Central Market, LivornoThis same wall of the “Mercato Centrale” was thoroughly cleaned last summer. The only question then was how long it would last.
Now we know.

Tricolor Night

Central Market illuminated by tricolour floodlights, LivornoMost of you probably already know how much I like events like the so called White Night or Blue Night. A Tricolor Night became unavoidable and therefore a constellation of minor non-events was organized, or better disorganized, all over the town center.
Horse rider in not-so-Garibaldine attire, LivornoRamshackle bands playing improbable music of the Risorgimento, horse riders in even more improbable “garibaldino” attire and the since unattained technical prowess of illuminating our “Mercato Centrale” with three colored floodlights, were some of the pearls of this absolutely forgettable night.

White Night

This image was taken during “Across the Beatles”, a midnight show inside the “Mercato Centrale”. After my rant against “Effetto Venezia”, I have to confess that there is one thing that I despise even more: the so called “Notte Bianca” (White Night).White Night, LivornoThe purpose of this event would be to keep people awake until dawn with music and open shops. This could work in bigger cities, but here the few shops still open shut down at midnight, without any significant sale. The people still around, often sleepy or with a beer too much, wander aimlessly from a spot of loud music to another, until they decide that they belong to bed.White Night, LivornoThe first year that this thing was organized, they were so smart to plan fireworks at 4 AM, waking up and enraging the greater part of the Livornesi, soundly asleep at the time.
