A Longer Urania

The 61-meter “Urania” is a research vessel of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (National Research Council).

A few days ago the ship has been cut in half and additional pieces were inserted to bring her length to 67 meters.

I have never heard about elongating a ship before VP.. I wonder why?

Hmmm. I'm not sure I would want to sail on a ship that had been elongated like that. I'd be afraid, very afraid!

That is astounding! I'd never think you could cut a ship in half and make it longer! As some other commenters have suggested, would that not weaken the structure so a very strong storm could tear the ship apart at the middle?
