Cinema Jolly

Cinema Jolly, Livorno
It was built in 1913 as “Salone Margherita”, but we always knew it as “Cinema Jolly”, the name probably changed after the war, when it became a quite popular cheap movie theater.
Cinema Jolly, Livorno
Its last incarnation was as an adult movie theater, when such a thing still existed.
Cinema Jolly, Livorno
The building has been closed and almost abandoned for a while, but it is now undergoing some refurbishing to transform it in a commercial space: a definite improvement, at least in this case.
Cinema Jolly, Livorno
Let us hope that at least some of the interesting decorations will be preserved.

Fascinating old building! I agree that it should be renovated but with some sense of its original structure and decorations. In my mind's eye, I can see, in that 2nd shot, the place filled with people staring eagerly at the screen.

Very much an improvement. If the fine details can be saved, so much the better.

Beautiful old building.

The building has great bones. It can be transformed into a palace.

Hoping it will once again be jolly inside.

At least they are trying to save it. Beautiful building. I always wonder how these amazing structures fall in disrepair before everyone's eyes.

We have one of these too. Yup, it went the 'adult theater' route too. The last 10 years or so it has evolved into a quite popular rock venue, complete with some ornate work and a balcony.

I do hope they restore it and preserve some of its character.

You're right, in this case, and if they keep the original features, it will be good to see it restored.
