Customs on the Water

The “Dogana d'acqua” complex was built in the 1830s as a barrier where the “Canale dei Navicelli” passed the Leopoldine Walls. It was heavily damaged during the WWII air raids over the port of Livorno.

VP, this is another fine pairing of your photo with an historic photo. Surprising that there is still WW II damage to be found.

Both the present and pre WWII structures are very impressive.

This was interesting, VP. The war was a long time ago. I'm surprised that the damage is still so extensive.

What a shame. It was such a beautiful building.

They went to great lengths to collect taxes.

What a shame we had to have a war.

I'm so glad they left the ruins instead of tearing them apart. A great reminder of what can never happen again. Great post!
