Window on the Harbour

Porto Mediceo from a window of the “Fortezza Vecchia, Old Fortress, LivornoThe “Porto Mediceo” seen from a window of the “Fortezza Vecchia” (Old Fortress), built by Antonio da Sangallo for the Medici in 1534. My “window” was probably an embrasure for a large gun. On the left, before the swing bridge, there is the “Darsena Vecchia” (Old Harbor) which now host the Coast Guard, the Fire Department and mainly fishing boats. On the right, you can see one of the three bastions of the fortress: this is called the “Canaviglia” and Cosimo I liked it so much to have a residence built on top of it. After the bridge is the “Porto Mediceo” proper, dominated here by the huge yellow hull of a Corsica-Sardinia ferry.

What a great photo...very well done. Nicely framed and the colors mesh perfectly, especially the yellow ferry.

And thanks for the history lesson. Being an American, I'm always amazed at how old some of these structures are.

I also appreciate very much your stopping by my blogs. Thanks!

Hi Vogon, you figured out why the restaurant was called 3512, it's the zip code! lol, I was wondering, the age of the owner and one of his childeren? It couldn't be a combination of a couples ages, 3512, the day the world ends? No that's 2012...:)

Cheers from Marcel!
