Via Grande

Via Grande seen from the Bridge of Sighs, LivornoThis is “Via Grande”, the whole half a mile of it, seen from the the entrance of the “Porto Mediceo”. At its far end we can see some of the buildings surrounding “Piazza della Repubblica”.
This picture was taken last Monday, a pre-festive day in Italy, at rush hour. You can see the same street, practically empty, in our “Ferragosto” post. I'm obviously showing off the full zoom of my new camera...

    Zooming is good for show-offs. I like the way it compresses the distance.

    And what new camera did you get, perchance? There are many here in Florida who demand to know!

    I love the foreshortening going on here, very cool--makes it look REALLY busy and crowded, which it probably IS. But the picture emphasizes that.

    (I fixed the "Flanders Fields" problem. Thanks for alerting me. :-D

    This is such a wonderfully rich image. Are those decorations above? For the festival? Or the holidays? You've caught so many details here that are well worth spending time studying.

    just kidding. Probably the worst traffic jamb I've been in was not here in LA area but in Honolulu. Similar scene to yours - lots of cars & trucks and busses on small overloaded roads/freeways. Aren't you glad you are walking?

    Excellent idea for the new zoom ... but how much traffic, perhaps it is better to close the center

    Wonderful! You have to "embiggen" this one to feel you've gone inside it. I love the shot. The decorations crossing the street look so strange. Thanks for the link. It's nice to compare it to a day with no traffic. I wouldn't have known it was the same street. Like Jacob, I'm wondering about the camera and what X is the zoom, or did you get an SLR? I remember reading once where you said if you got another camera, it would be another "bridge." Just curious. I use a Canon with a 12x. They make a similar one now with 18x or 24x.

    After few years of honorable service and tens of thousands of pictures, my aged PowerShot S3 IS is retiring. It has been replaced by a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS.
    I have already posted the first images taken with the new camera (Moby Aki, Sunday Market), but I still have a sizable archive created with the old one.

    Neat shot! I'm guess you're still playing around with the new camera and leaning about its new features. It's amazing how long a camera can last today. They become such an extension of our eye and can take a lot of abuse.

    This street looks terrific but yesterday's post is of a scene I never grow tired of. I just love that canal and the bridges.

    A good telephoto can show us things in quite a different way sometimes. You should have a lot of fun with your new zoom. I have found with some of my pictures, that I tend to zoom in first and ask questions later:)

    The Canon Powershot? Is that like an advanced point and shoot, or an SLR already? I'll have to look it up. Whatever it is, it takes great photos - this one is great, especially when enlarged.
