Bell Tower & Chimneys

San Ferdinando bell tower, Agip refinery chimneys, LivornoThe bell tower of the church of San Ferdinando (1716) in juxtaposition with the chimneys of the Agip refinery (1940) just outside Livorno. Both were heavily damaged by Allied bombings in World War II. The church was restored after the war and the plant completely rebuilt in 1950.

I would never have imagined that an Agip plant would look so good! It gives the church tower that little "umph"!

I was checking the map of Italy the other day and didn't realize Livorno is near Pisa.

If I visit Italy one day I'll go to Firenze first.

What a great juxtaposition between light an dark...and I love bell towers...in fact, every time I see one I compulsively photograph it.

Very nice. Thanks for the history, too!
