La Gran Guardia

Theater La Gran Guardia, LivornoIf the “Odeon” was larger with its 2300 seats, “La Gran Guardia” was the more noble of our movie theaters. It was built during the reconstruction of the area of “Via Grande”, almost destroyed during the air raids of the last war.Theater La Gran Guardia, Livorno“La Gran Guardia” was inaugurated in 1954 and, with its 1300 seats and a great acoustic, was the venue of choice not only for movies, but for theater, concerts and even operas.Theater La Gran Guardia, LivornoThe curious name, which literally means Big Guard, comes from a nearby old station of the guards called in the same way.Theater La Gran Guardia, LivornoThe theater closed in 2005, the same year of the “Odeon”, but at least there are no cars in its future: within months an international retail-clothing company will open a huge store on the premises.Theater La Gran Guardia, LivornoWe all wish well to this theater in its new incarnation; it was so sad to see this place as it was for the last time.

Behind the Scenes

Inside the Goldoni Theater, LivornoWe are again inside the Teatro Goldoni, this time on the stage: sets of scenography are dangling from the wood grating placed at about 30 meters of height.Inside the Goldoni Theater, LivornoWe are now on top of the grating, just above the stage, and you can admire a giant terracotta jar: full of water it was used then as a primitive fire fighting device.Inside the Goldoni Theater, LivornoPeople working behind the scenes were proud of their work and wrote their accomplishments on the walls. Some of these writing have been left during the renovation of the theatre.
This one says: “Newest Operetta Company, December 14, 1914”.

Inside the Goldoni

Inside the Goldoni Theater, LivornoMy friend Stefano has a key for every door and a couple of days ago let me inside the “Teatro Goldoni”. You can see people working on the stage for the next show.Inside the Goldoni Theater, LivornoThere are four order of boxes with the “Palco Reale” in the middle. The central part of the fourth row is called “galleria” and the whole top row, the one with the balustrade, is the “loggione”.Inside the Goldoni Theater, LivornoThe “Palco Reale” hasn't hosted royals lately, but our President, the Livornese Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, was there in 2004 for a “Cavalleria rusticana” by the Livornese Pietro Mascagni.

Teatro Goldoni

Goldoni Theater, LivornoThe Goldoni Theater or “Goldoni”, as it called informally here, was built on a project of the architect Giuseppe Cappellini (Livorno, 1812 - Firenze, 1876). It was inaugurated as “Imperiale e Regio Teatro Leopoldo” in honor of Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, on 24 July 1847 with the opera “Robert le diable” by Giacomo Meyerbeer.
In 1860, with the unification of Italy, it was renamed “Regio Teatro Goldoni” after the celebrated Venetian playwright and librettist Carlo Goldoni. A Venetian honored in Tuscany needs an explanation: during his many wanderings and adventures in Italy, Goldoni was living in Livorno when, happily for us all, determined to pursue the playwriting as a profession. Years after, he set his “Trilogia della villeggiatura” (Holiday Trilogy) in Livorno, describing a family who crave and then spend a vacation to Montenero, only to return home completely exhausted.
Goldoni Theater, LivornoIn more recent times the theater fall into disrepair from the ravages of time and the neglect of the owners, so the municipality exercised its right of eminent domain in 1990, after the building was condemned few years before. The theater, after a long restoration, was inagurated (for a second time) on 24 January 2004 with “Cavalleria rusticana” by the Livorno-born Pietro Mascagni at the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, the Livorno-born Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
