Boccale & Calafuria

Boccale Castle, Livorno
One of the most striking points of our coast is the Castello del Boccale (Boccale Castle). [Photo by Maurizio]

The Calignaia Bridge

Calignaia bridge, Livorno
The Calignaia bridge was built in the early 1950s and has a span of 100 meters. On the north end of the bridge there is a renowned restaurant with a spectacular view on the sea. [Photo by Maurizio]

Assembling the Bridge

Waiting for the Bridge

Preparatory works for the new footbridge, Fortezza Vecchia, Livorno
The new footbridge between Piazza dei Grani and the Fortezza Vecchia will be installed in the course of this week. Some preparatory works were already done last Friday, to protect the flagstones from the weight of the heavy crane.

The crane was already in place yesterday: it will be probably used to lift the preassembled floating bridge and deploy it on the water of the canal below. In foreground, on the right, the “buca del grano”.

Santa Trinita Bridge

Ponte di Santa Trinita, Santa Trinita Bridge, Livorno
The Santa Trinita bridge is one of the main access point to Livorno from the north and the cargo area of the port. It has been damaged several times by trucks and never repaired.

The above picture was only an aperitif: as you can see the real damage lies a bit ahead.

The same damaged part seen from below. Considered the kind of traffic, it is incredible that a bridge like this has been built without a guard rail.

The Isthmus of Crocetta

Isthmus of Crocetta, Livorno
About a year and half ago I wrote about the non-bridge of Crocetta, the strange result of the works for the new canal in our historical Venice quarter. After four years since the dig started and a couple of years since it was completed, there is still a pile of dirt where a new bridge should have been. The reddish girder across the canal in foreground should have been one of the two projected footbridges, the other one is a grayish line just below the yellow building in background.

The soil has now been secured with barriers and concrete, so the non-bridge has become an real isthmus.

This will be another welcoming sign for the tourists coming in town from the new bus terminal, planned just outside the walls, across the isthmus.

On the Brink

Missing railings, Ponte del Mercato, Livorno
Last week a car crashed through part of the railings of the Ponte del Mercato and almost fell off, stopping on the brink. The usual and ubiquitous barriers have been deployed...
