A Tree, at Last

Christmas tree, piazza Grande, Livorno
We have a Christmas tree, at last! It was set up without using public funds, thanks to a pool of local entrepreneurs.
Christmas tree, piazza Grande, Livorno
In the past days someone had already placed there a smaller tree, decorated with plastic plates: each one of them bears the name of a problem still “on the plate” for Livorno.

The Pisan Tree

Christmas tree, Piazza XX Settembre, Pisa
For the first time in years we do not have a Christmas tree in any of our squares. There is no money for it, so let us enjoy the nice tree the spendthrift Pisans managed to set up in Piazza XX Settembre, in front of their Town Hall.
Christmas tree, Palazzo Blu, Pisa
To add insult to injury, our profligate neighbors erected another sizable Christman tree at Palazzo Blu, which is hosting the exhibition “Amedeo Modigliani et ses amis” (Amedeo Modigliani and his friends), dedicated to the Livornese painter.

Christmas in Florence

Our friend Karl of Bolzano Daily Photo asked me yesterday how I was going to celebrate the anniversary of this blog. My answer was: not posting about Livorno for a few days. Welcome to Christmas in Florence!

Another nativity scene, with also a waterfall. It is set in what once was the Cemetery of Plaona, on the right side of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, and it is seen from the entrance of Via degli Avelli.

Panettone

Panettone, Livorno
“Panettone” (plural “panettoni”) is a sweet leavened egg bread made with butter, raisins and candied orange. Originally from Milan, “panettone” is not easy to make: it usually comes in 1 kg pieces and the average price for a mass-produced industrial version is around 4 Euro, while the hand-made version goes for 4-5 times that. Some other variations are available such as plain or with chocolate, but they are not the real thing. It is served in slices, usually with “spumante” (sparkling wine) or sweet wines.

Horseshoe

Horseshoe, ribbons, bells, hot peppers and ladybug, LivornoI saw this horseshoe in “Via Ricasoli”: it has probably something to do with the Holidays and good luck, but it is hard to decipher completely...
