The 62-meter “CREI I” was built in 1978. She is a dredge, or a vessel that is used to excavate and remove material from the bottom of a body of water.
She can also be used for beach nourishment, digging fresh sand from the bottom of the sea and literally spraying it from afar on a depleted shoreline.

Looks like a hefty boat worthy of the work she is doing! I'm sure she's much in demand. Nice photos, too.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of a kind of marine mole. :-)
ReplyDeleteI wondered what the contraption was, but I expect that's key for dredging.
ReplyDeleteA very useful vessel!
ReplyDeleteThat's a big vacuum.
ReplyDeleteShe is so strange looking! And "beach nourishment," what a good idea and interesting term!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lois, the first photo shows it in the best way.
ReplyDeleteI like your harbour activity VP, it makes me think of Fremantle harbour.
ReplyDeleteI think I've seen one like this in Brest...
ReplyDeleteBeach renourishment is huge around here. But, for a variety of reasons, they usually truck the sand in.
ReplyDeleteYour first image is very nice.
That sounds a bit messy for all the living things in the water.
ReplyDeleteFascinating. I'll have to pay better attention to the boats that dredge harbours in the Great Lakes!
