Hat-racked Tree

Pruned tree, Villa Maria, Livorno
A heavily pruned plane tree in the park of “Villa Maria”. Hat-racking is the severe act of pruning a tree by reducing the length of branches, lowering the tree height, stubbing or removing foliage so that the tree resembles a hat or coat rack. It seems that this should not be an acceptable pruning practice.

  2. There's a Greek song, which refers to people, using such branches as a metaphor.

  4. They prune crepe myrtle trees here like that here. We let ours grow as big as they like.

  5. Perhaps too much, but to me it looks arty and nice.

By whatever name or none, the practice of it is always painful to see at first.

  7. It does seem harsh VP, but trees are so hardy, before long it will be green again.
