The interior of the “Duomo”, rebuilt after its almost total destruction during the war, has a relatively simple and modern appearance.
The boxlike space is graced by the surviving pieces of the old cathedral recovered from the ruins and by the artworks which were stored elsewhere for safekeeping during wartime.
The “altare maggiore” (major altar) seen from the transept. On the exterior of the apse once stood the “Fontana del Duomo” (Cathedral's Fountain).

ReplyDeleteSimple, but beautiful. The renovations were well done!
ReplyDeleteWell, it still looks great - what a lovely place!
ReplyDeleteThis is a most impressive church. Glad the restorations have turned out so well. Is that not the emblem of the Pope inlaid into the floor? Is there a special relationship to the Pope here, other than being the head of the Church?
ReplyDeleteI like it simple. But then again I also like the more ornate churches. I'm no good at symbolism, why the keys?
ReplyDeleteStrange to see a flat ceiling in a duomo. Glad they salvaged bits and pieces for the restoration. I hate to think of such places being destroyed in war.
ReplyDeleteQuaite unusual simple! But it looks good: a peaceful place for recollection.
