You have already seen this device, probably in some old movie: it is called engine order telegraph and it was used on the deck of a vessel to request a certain desired speed from the engine room.

The dials of the two telegraphs are different only for the language used, but “ahead” is on the left above and on the right below.

Interesting post and great photos VP. Thanks for these.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why "ahead" is on opposite sides of the two telegraphs. Was that mentioned?
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a beautiful piece of art.
ReplyDeleteI love the second one against that great blue background.
ReplyDelete@ Jack - They have twin dials: the first device is seen from the left, the second one from the right.
ReplyDeleteYou are right---I have seen this device in many old movies and maritime museums. Great post. MB
ReplyDeleteI've seen it on ships. Now I suppose they are collectors items...

ReplyDeleteTelegraphs! I never knew the name.
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember such orders being barked aboard ship in the old movies.
Funny to see these familiar Italian words not in a musical score.
I never knew the name either. Thanks VP, they are really cool.
ReplyDeleteI love the ship lingo and culture I learn from your posts! :D
