Acquario di Livorno

Aquarium of LivornoThis is not a Supermax by the sea, but the new “Diacinto Cestoni” Municipal Aquarium. Our first sea aquarium opened in the 1930s, but it was soon destroyed by the war. Rebuilt in the 1960s, it was brought to an inglorious end in the 1990s by the sudden death of all the fishes.Aquarium of LivornoAfter almost ten years of works, an opening ceremony took place last July, in an obviously unfinished structure with several empty tanks. Some more fishes and a few sharks have arrived since then.Aquarium of LivornoThis still unfinished and already rusty wonder is now open to the general public only during weekends. The price of the ticket has dropped from 15 to 12 Euro, but almost everybody can easily get the reduced rate of 10 Euro.

  3. That top photo has wonderful composition and balance. It has four striking visual zones that make quite a rhythm.

  5. I like the top photo best. The checkerboard pattern leading up to the building emphasizes the space and distance.

  8. I'd love to spend some hours inside it.
Did they ever find out what caused the sudden death of all the fish? That day must have been so sad for their caretakers.
If this aquarium were here in the Middle East, some would probably say the building is cursed. (God forbid.)

  13. What an emotional post! First I get dizzy with the first shot... wow... then I turn perplexed at what could kill an entire aquarium of sea life! Interesting sky in your last photo, VP.
