A friend let me have a look at this room inside the “Palazzo di Giustizia” (Courthouse) of Livorno. Some restoration works are still going on and it will be probably used as a conference room.
This was the Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier when these buildings were owned by the Company of Jesus. It was opened in 1707 and was used until 1773, when the Order was suppressed.
There was an external entrance from “Via della Madonna”, which is just outside the windows on the right side of the room.
This is worth restoring, for sure! Is that gold leaf or a fancy paint made to look like gold? Is this being paid for by city taxes or a private company?

ReplyDeleteI'd find it difficult to concentrate at first if I were to have a conference in such surroundings. It would be hard to do anything but gaze in wonder at my environment. But perhaps, after it all become familiar, working in such a place would be inspired and inspiring.

ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful room, and I'm glad you got a chance to see and post it. Some restoration necessary, yes. You're making me laugh on two counts. For one, the lady in the oval seems to have half of a pig's face. I'm sure that can be corrected with paint!
ReplyDeleteOh yes. I also love the grainy quality of the photo in the middle. It may be due to low light, but for whatever reason, it's very artistic. It goes well with the subject.
