Decorated Shutters

Tattoo shop, Scali delle Cantine, LivornoDecorated shop shutters aren't common here, they are usually painted a drab grey, with some recent exceptions: a tattoo shop in “Scali delle Cantine”.Newsstand, Scali Saffi, LivornoA newsstand on a corner of the “Mercato Centrale”, probably worried to avoid worse offences...Seafood shop in Borgo dei Cappuccini, LivornoA seafood shop in “Borgo dei Cappuccini”. The street is called after the friars, not the popular coffee drink. The “cappuccino” takes its name from the friars, because it is the same color of their habit.

  1. Whatever the grammar, it's a great coffee drink. But I have a hard time finding a good cappuccino when not in Italy.

  2. Hmmm...methinks you have been invaded by very strange people who carry brushes or markers or whatever along with gallons of paint or ink or whatever and paint stuff on your buildings...

I don't see that kind of thing much here in Ocala, or other sites close by...maybe in Miami?

Like you suggest, maybe the owners contract with the Mafia to have their place painted so they don't have some enforcer come along and break their legs or burn down their shops.

    Maybe?

Well, hell, I was just guessing.

Hope you have a fun week!

  5. I like them all. I think it is a wonderful way to bring color to a city if it is used well.

  6. Very artsy way to paint some usually grey and boring shutters, newsstands, etc! The seafood shop painting takes the award!
Check out the goats I spotted on my family vacation on my Monday posting!
    Ciao!

  7. I like the bottom one.

"The “cappuccino” takes its name from the friars, because it is the same color of their habit."

    = Very interesting I didn't know that.

  9. Just goes to show that some graffiti can look good. The first one I mean. And Nemo of course. The second one looks more like an unwanted graffiti to me...

  10. Oh hey, that's an interesting fact about cappuccino and the Capuchin friars! I've always wondered about the similarity of the name but never thought there really was a connection.

I like these airbrushed shutters, though maybe not the second one very much. Better designed and done on purpose than get yicky-looking graffiti.

  12. I feel always a bit ambivalent about this kind of art (since it's art probably), but those here look nice, especially the last one with friendly shark:)

  13. I would hope that a tattoo shop would be more original than drab grey.

We have this sort of public art in Sydney, too. We lso have extensive ugly graffiti.

I like this style much better!

  15. Totally excellent! I have seen similar shutter art in Barcelona. Funny, now that I think about it, we don't have those steel shutters here in Boston that much.

  16. They did great job getting rid of the gray.

  19. I do like the nemo blinds, although I think the gray looks al little more "normal" with Baroque and Renaissance buildings. Per can come try some of our cappuccino in Oregon. I know one place that's very good. I also found a good one in Boston, but it was owned and run by Italians.

  20. @ tapirgal - I shall deny this in public, but I have never tried a cappuccino. I drink my rare espresso dark, without any sugar or milk.
