Painted View

Pamiglione, painting, LivornoQuickly crossing the street, just after my visit to “Villa Regina”, I saw this painting in a window. It wasn't a gallery, just a hardware store, so there is no masterpiece involved here. I tried to shoot the same place, the “Darsena Vecchia”, as in the painting. There are a few minor differences which seem to date the view (not necessarily the painting) at some decades ago.Pamiglione, Darsena Vecchia, LivornoOn the left you can see the “Hotel Gran Duca”, a nice venue hosted inside a tract of the ancient walls of Livorno. Our most famous landmark, the “Four Moors”, is on the right of the hotel. Between the two pink buildings starts “Via Grande”, our porticoed main street. The bridge on the right, called “Ponte dei sospiri” (Bridge of Sighs), is the main access to the “Porto Mediceo”.Gulls, Pamiglione, Darsena Vecchia, LivornoSome commotion in the water attracted my attention: a group of seagulls was gathering excited around a fishing boat, whose crew was cleaning up their catch of the day.

  7. The differences really are minor between the two.

  8. Cool find! Glad you could still take a photo of the same scene. The differences can actually just be artistic license :)

  9. Thank you for showing both the painting and the actual scene today. Very, very interesting.

  10. I like it when you can take a photo of a place that also is in a painting. Dave of Costa Rica Daily Photo, my husband, often does that with our paintings. We will buy a painting when we travel and then he will ask the artist where he painted it and then he will hike on over to that location, wherever it is, and get the photo. He always shows people in our home the photo that goes with each painting. It is fun to see them both just like in your post today.

  12. I like the painting and the photo. It's nice to see someone's interpretation of a landscape. I agree with Jacob though - I prefer the photo.

    Seagull = ick!

  13. Very cool idea to compare a painting with a photo. Why does that bridge have that both delightful and melancholic name?

  16. I really appreciate the extra effort you put into reenacting the picture! The drawing is very nice - makes a great souvenir if it is not extremely expensive :) Must be fun looking for the exact spot the artist had.

  19. The painting is quite nice & I just adore the comparison between the painted and the photographed.
    I don't often see seagulls just sitting like ducks on the water. Very cute scene. Is the boat's name San Pedro?
