The Final Pair

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoThis is our last set of turrets, belonging to a pair of identical villas.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoA turret is still open while the other is closed by windows.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoThe two villas share a large pool on the back of the buildings.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoBoth houses sport ornate corner balconies. Pergola Turrets

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoWe have already seen some extravagant turrets along this tract of “Viale Italia”, but these are different.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoThe turrets have a pergola supported by multiple columns.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoIn an excellent corner location, the villa has a lot of green around.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoAnother look at the turret decorated by amphora-like vessels.

Twins

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoBack to the normal facades on “Viale Italia”, where we have this time our first, but not last, case of twin villas.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoThe buildings are painted different colors, like twins who wish to dress differently.

Sideways

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoThe first villa of the new block has as much as two turrets but is strangely facing a side street of “Viale Italia”.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoIts facade, which is the side, on the avenue is not so impressive.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoFrom “Villa Letizia” the pair of turrets is perfectly visible.

Villa Letizia

View from Villa Letizia, LivornoThis is a view from the roof terrace of “Villa Letizia” toward the hills southeast of Livorno. The first tower is the old reservoir of the villa, the bell tower in the middle of the picture belongs to the church of Saint Simon, in “Ardenza Terra”. Near the top of the hills we can see Montenero and its Sanctuary. The strange address of the villa is “Via dei Pensieri”, or Street of Thoughts.Villa Letizia, LivornoThe villa was built in the first years of 18th Century amidst a huge park. It was completed in 1873 by a new owner, David Bondi, who restored the villa and built the reservoir tower.Villa Letizia, LivornoIn the last years of the 19th Century the “Ippodromo” (racetrack) was built in northern part of the park.
Now the main building is an educational facility with an off-campus degree course of the University of Pisa. Computer related training courses are hold here quite often.Villa Letizia, LivornoOn the southern end of the park, where the main entrance once was, the original “belvedere”, is wrapped in scaffolding. From up there they could see the sea just across the avenue that is now “Viale Italia”.

Near a Castle

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoAfter miniature castles and Moorish mansions, the last “palazzina” of this block has a quite normal and elegant look.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoMost of the pictures posted these days were taken on the “surfers” Saturday, as you can see from the ominous sky, along with some archive images. It has been raining almost daily since, and fresh photos are difficult to get.

Hotel Gennarino

Hotel Gennarino, Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoWe have already shown you a five star and a four star hotel, just in case you happen to be in Livorno. Here is a relatively more modest choice, the three star “Hotel Gennarino”.Hotel Gennarino, Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoDefinitely a small castle, this building is obviously part of the series on “Viale Italia”.Hotel Gennarino, Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoThe hotel is just opposite the “Accademia Navale”, within walking distance of several “bagni” (beach resorts).

Moorish Mansion

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoWhen I said “last turret” it was only in merely topographic terms, because there are still several villas to be seen on “Viale Italia”.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoIt is definitely in Moorish style and, as any other villas in this place, it was built in the 1930s.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoThe turret is quite elegant and the whole thing is perfectly kept.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoI'm afraid you'll have to expect few more of these fancy buildings in the next days.

The Last Turret

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoAt the southernmost end of the villas along “Viale Italia” we have this peculiar building: its turret is not high, but absolutely typical.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoThis last villa borders on the trees around the “Caprilli” racetrack.Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoLiberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoA detail of the top of the turret and an exotic shaped window, quite at odds with the modern rolling shutter.

Viale Italia

Liberty villa, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoEverybody would love a house with a turret, even better if from there we can see the sea...Liberty villas, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoOn four blocks on the “Viale Italia”, just in front of the “Accademia Navale”, we have a dozen of nicely turreted villas in Eclectic style, built around the 1930s and projected by Fosco Cioni, a capable designer without any official qualification.Old postcard, Liberty villas, eclectic style, viale Italia, LivornoIn this case the postcard is only seventy years old and the angle slightly different, but almost everything else remains the same.
